AUG/SEP Editor’s Note by Jen Theisen

As summer winds down, it’s tempting to get a little melancholy. Yet, I smile as I think of all the adventures, big and small, we crossed off our summer bucket list.

JenThe Northern Wisconsin State Fair was a much-anticipated tradition. I can almost still taste those famous Wisconsin cheese curds. It’s probably a good thing the Fair comes to town only once a year! We celebrated birthdays, beach days, and beautiful days on Lake Wissota. Catching a flick at the Gemini Drive-In Theater was a nostalgic treat. Our annual week in the Wisconsin Northwoods on the Chippewa Flowage is always a highlight, as we make many more cherished family memories. Loads of time on baseball diamonds and sitting courtside let me watch the boys do what they love. I treasure our summers, and every year I am amazed at how these three glorious months zip by. There is still time though for memories to be made, ladies; so let’s get out there and soak up every last drop.

Although subtle, I see the trees letting go of their green. The slightly shorter days remind me fall is patiently waiting her turn. The early signs of autumn get me thinking about the seasons of life. This summer I was fortunate to attend a few of my friends’ children’s weddings. What a joy to see these young adults start this blessed grown-up chapter. It seems like just yesterday we were organizing play dates! We grieved as we said goodbye to a dear friend’s husband. My little sister turned 40, and the baby of our family rang in his 35th year. This period of life reminds me that with each passing season I’m a little bolder and maybe even a little wiser.

Life moves forward, and there is just nothing we can do to stop it. Believe me, I’ve tried. My hope for my readers is that you might pass through these seasons with an amazing posse of sisters. My wish for you is this: women who lift you up on the worst days and celebrate with you on your best, sister-friends who understand your weaknesses and come alongside you making you stronger, ladies who respect you enough to tell you the truth (even if you may not be ready for it yet), and women who provide the sacred gift of total acceptance in spite of quirks and flaws. A network of sisters makes life better, in the good and the bad. I am honored to have—and to be heartened by—the sisters who walk with me as time marches on.

As we embrace fall and every season in life, let us be open to the pearls of wisdom found in change. Let us reach out to our sisters, nurturing and prioritizing these relationships. Let us commit to encouraging a community of sisterhood—one that lifts up and never tears down. It is my hope this issue of 5ive for Women will inspire. We know you’ll be warmed by the stories of empowerment and strength in the sisterhood and excited to experience your next season.

The journey continues: faith, family, friends, fitness, and finance.
