COMING HOME
By Rosamunde Pilcher
Book Review by Maureen Therou
Don’t let the length of this novel scare you, if you pick it up to read; it is well worth the time spent. With our world in turmoil, it was wonderful for me to put myself in a very different world – an era when people took the time to spend with each other, when life was slower.
The story takes place in Cornwall, England, pre- and post-WWII. It follows Judith Dunbar from the tender age of fourteen, when she attends boarding school, until adulthood. It was very interesting how the British experienced the war in comparison to the experience of our present wars.
Pilcher is very descriptive when writing, whether talking about the landscape, daily living or what is going on in Judith’s life and with the people around her. It almost feels like you are right there with her as she experiences life.
It is definitely a long tale, but I enjoyed all the hours I spent with Judith and the people she loved. This is the first book I have read by this author, but I will definitely be reading more of her novels. I hope that you will find it as absorbing as I did.
