Happy 2016 to all. I hope the New Year greeted you enjoying this Wisconsin winter and starting your New Year’s resolutions. 06: Creating a Photo Wall

When you think about love, what images come to mind? For me, above all else it’s the people I love. And with that comes about a bazillion photos of family, friends, places, pets, and so on. So start sorting through those photos, pick out your very favorites, and let’s create a photo wall. The number of photos depends on the space you have and the frames you choose. It’s best to start with fewer photos because you can always add to your wall; it’s much harder to pare down after getting carried away framing 100 of your favorite photos. Start …

FEB/MAR 2016 Editor’s Note by Jen Theisen

For the love of it all! I am convinced I’m the queen of procrastination. Ladies, it’s been a rough one. I was certain, after the holidays, we would slow down. Well, that was a nice thought. I am, however, so excited about this For the Love: Renew and Redo issue (despite the tardy letter from the editor). As February rolls in, so does the light at the end of Old Man Winter’s tunnel. Although this February we observe a leap year, it’s still a short winter month. I do love February, and it’s not because of its mushy-gushy holiday. Warmer …

Rays of Grace XXVII: Natalie

I’m halfway through my high school junior year. Crazy! So far, I’ve created countless memories. I’ve gained many friends and lost a few. I’ve had successes along with failures. Most importantly, I’m learning from my mistakes, and (hopefully) growing into a respectable person. As I look back, I see someone who has supported me through my highs and lows. Her name is Natalie. French Onion Soup & Galette & Turtles

My Joy in the Journey of cooking began at a young age. I was less than 10 years old when a friend gave me a cookbook; I loved it! In 1983, I published my first recipe—in the Paullina Centennial Cookbook. Before I could drive, I would walk to the farmers market in my small town to buy tomatoes and other fresh produce. In my first year of marriage, out of necessity, I made mayonnaise from scratch. The year we lived in Seattle, I made my first homemade syrup, since giant blackberry bushes greeted me just outside our apartment. I laugh …

Child-Free Woman

I am a 51-year-old, unmarried woman without any children. Thankfully, this doesn’t make me quite the anomaly that it used to. In fact, last year’s U.S. Census Bureau showed more women are childless (47.6 percent) than at any other time since they began tracking in 1976. Yet the expectation remains; others assume a woman of my age has children. Click the magazine below to read the rest of Mary Ellen Bliss’s insights (for all of us) on being a child-free woman. Rays of Grace XXVI: Running is My “Thing”

Sports are popular in our house. My brothers never stop playing or watching or talking about sports. My mom is a great runner. My dad runs almost every day. Running has become my “thing,” too. As a sophomore, I made the cross country second team All-Conference. Everyone was proud of me, but I wanted more. So last summer, I attended running camp, worked with a personal coach, and put in extra miles. My goal was first team All-Conference and state qualification. When this season began, I was in the best shape of my life. Then something didn’t feel right. I …
