JUNE / JULY 2019 Editor’s Note from Jen Theisen

Hey ladies, summer is starting to sizzle, and everything I love about Wisconsin summer is almost here. I love the lazy days at the lake. I love late night fires and early morning runs, followed by quiet cups of coffee while my tribe still sleeps. As I am writing this, I am reflecting on summers past. It seems like just yesterday I was spending lazy afternoons at the pool with my tribe. As much as I love this time of year, I always get a little melancholy as I feel the nostalgia of summers past. Life seemed crazy then, but as I reflect, it was so much easier. I wish I could create a perfume that would allow me to recapture the smell of my little nuggets on those long summer days: a mix of sunscreen and ice cream, with a touch of lilac. What I wouldn’t give to capture one more time when their wet little bodies would lay close to me to warm up after being in the pool for hours.

Summer this year is more fast-and-furious than ever before. Hank has secured a job at the Country Club as a lifeguard and will also do summer swim lessons. Gus, my ever resourceful son, has gained employment as a janitor at his high school. I recall when I was pregnant with Gus, well-meaning friends expressed concern about me naming him August/“Gus,” as they thought it was the name of a janitor. Well, my friends, it’s official: Gus will be a janitor, and I couldn’t be prouder. Gus will also participate in his last year at Camp Manitou. A Theisen summer is not complete without Camp Manitou.

My lovely Grace is not coming home this summer. She is working as a certified nursing assistant and taking classes. I am not going to sugar coat it, Mamas; that one stung a lot. Joe is settled into a new apartment in Uptown, and I know I will hear all about all his summer adventures and mishaps.

My sweet Quinn embraces every part of life and will keep my summer filled with plenty of fun moments. As I get lonely for summers past, he will make sure to indulge me in the tradition of the summer bucket list.

Ladies, this issue is all about summer lovin’. It is chock full of great ideas to help us embrace and love all the Chippewa Valley has to offer this summer. My beautiful friends, let’s enjoy every last second of summer in Northern Wisconsin. I hope to see many of you participating in some of the favorite summer events: summer concerts, farmers market lazy mornings, sunny days on the boat, and of course—my all-time favorite summer fun—our Northern Wisconsin State Fair.

The summer 2019 journey continues in faith, family, friends, fitness, and finance.
